StarrHacks Coaching vs Traditional Tutoring: What’s the Difference?

Tutors help students learn content. I help students learn how to learn.

When a child struggles in school, many parents immediately think, “We need a tutor.” And sometimes, that’s true.

But often, the real challenge isn’t the subject itself. It’s the skills behind learning. That’s where my StarrHacks coaching comes in.

What is StarrHacks Coaching?

My coaching goes deeper. It builds the executive functioning skills that make learning possible across every subject, such as:

  • Planning and prioritizing assignments

  • Staying organized with materials and deadlines

  • Managing time effectively

  • Starting tasks without procrastinating

  • Following through to completion

  • Regulating emotions

In our sessions, students don’t just talk about strategies. They apply them while working on their actual schoolwork.

What Does Tutoring Do?

Tutoring is designed to fill knowledge gaps and reteach content. Examples:

  • A math tutor reviews equations.

  • A writing tutor works on essays.

  • A language tutor practices grammar and vocabulary.

Tutors are invaluable when a child doesn’t understand material or needs extra practice.

🌱 But even with tutoring, some students continue to fall behind. Why? Because their struggle isn’t with what they’re learning — it’s with how they manage learning.

Assignments get done, and skills get stronger at the same time.

What’s the Real Difference?

💡 Tutors teach content. I teach independence.

If your child is bright but struggles with organization, focus, or follow-through, a tutor may not address the root problem.

My StarrHacks coaching develops the lasting skills that transform potential into achievement in school and in life.

Why Does the Difference Matter?

Here’s the key difference:

  • Tutoring helps students succeed in a single subject.

  • Coaching empowers students to succeed in all subjects and beyond.

Tutoring can boost grades in the moment. The form of coaching that I provide transforms how students think, plan, and learn for the long term.

That’s why many parents tell me, “We didn’t realize coaching was what our child truly needed.”

Once students learn these skills, they no longer depend on someone to reteach the content. They gain independence, confidence, and the ability to manage challenges on their own.
